Sean Strickland Fires Warning Shot at Khamzat Chimaev
Sean Strickland has fired a warning shot at Khamzat Chimaev, saying the Chechen fighter "keeps running his f*cking mouth" after hinting at a potential rematch.
Nassourdine Imavov is currently considered the No. 1 contender in the middleweight division, but Strickland seems to have his sights set on Chimaev. In a recent tweet, Strickland responded to fans asking about his next fight, saying his shoulder is getting solid and he needs a little longer. However, when asked about his next opponent, Strickland took aim at Chimaev, suggesting he teach the fighter how to cut weight.
Chimaev, who was heavily campaigning for a rematch, clapped back at Strickland on Twitter, saying the American is a coward who will ask for forgiveness when they see each other again. He also warned Strickland not to cry like a girl next time they fight.
Meanwhile, Imavov chimed in on the situation, telling Strickland to "do what you're told" and that he will see him soon. It remains to be seen whether Strickland will follow through on his threat and face Chimaev in a rematch.
Strickland's comments come after his split-decision victory over Chimaev at UFC 328 in May, where he handed the Chechen fighter his first-career loss. Chimaev had been slowing down early in the fight, but managed to catch a second wind, only to come up short in the judges' eyes.
The tension between Strickland and Chimaev is sure to be one to watch in the coming weeks and months. With Imavov already considered the No. 1 contender, it's unclear whether Strickland will be able to secure a rematch with Chimaev.
