Rory McIlroy Closes Gap to Join Clark at the Top

Rory McIlroy has closed the gap to join Wyndham Clark at the top of the BMW Championship leaderboard after a five-under 65 on day three.

McIlroy improved from a day two round of 69 that cost him his first-day lead, birdieing four of the last six holes to move up to second spot on 12 under. The Northern Irishman's impressive round saw him level with American Patrick Cantlay, who shot a 66 on Saturday.

Clark, meanwhile, extended his lead at Bellerive Country Club to five shots with a 65. Despite double-bogeying the opening hole, Clark was superb thereafter, birdieing twice and then hitting an eagle on the eighth to go into the turn on two under.

He then birdied four of the next five holes before bogeying the last, returning to the clubhouse on -17 overall. Clark's compatriot Collin Morikawa sits on -10, with South Korea's Im Sung-Jae on -9.

England's Aaron Rai and Matthew Fitzpatrick are a shot behind, having shot 67 and 68 respectively on Saturday. The experienced English pair of Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood both slipped down the field after over-par rounds, with Rose shooting 73 and Fleetwood's 74 putting him on +2.

The BMW Championship is one of the final events in the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup playoffs, with the top 70 players competing for a share of the $20 million prize fund. The tournament has been a closely contested affair, with several players vying for a spot in the top 10.

McIlroy's move up the leaderboard has brought him within striking distance of Clark, who will be looking to hold off the challenge from the Northern Irishman on the final day. With a five-shot lead, Clark will be confident of claiming his first PGA Tour win of the season, but McIlroy has shown his ability to come from behind in the past.

The final day of the BMW Championship will see the remaining players competing for a share of the prize fund, with several players still in contention for a spot in the top 10. With the FedEx Cup playoffs reaching their climax, the tension will be high as the players battle it out for a share of the $20 million prize fund.
