Rio Ngumoha left out of England squad for Spain match

Liverpool winger Rio Ngumoha is not in England’s matchday squad for Saturday’s Nations League game against Spain at Wembley. The 18-year-old, who earned his first senior call-up this international window under manager Thomas Tuchel, will miss out on the meeting despite being part of the wider 27-man group.

Ngumoha made his England debut in June during a 1-0 friendly win over New Zealand in Tampa, coming off the bench and becoming the fifth-youngest player to wear the Three Lions shirt. His rise has been swift, breaking into Liverpool’s first team at just 16 when he started against Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup. He later scored a late winner in Liverpool’s 3-2 Premier League victory at Newcastle last season.

This season, Ngumoha has made three Premier League appearances for Liverpool under Andoni Iraola, starting just once. Tuchel praised the teenager when announcing the squad, pointing to his “natural courage and adventurous style of play” and saying England were “really excited about his potential.”

The decision to leave Ngumoha out of the squad for the Spain match is a selection choice rather than a withdrawal. He remains in the manager’s plans for the extended international period, which also includes Nations League fixtures against Czechia and Croatia.

England’s fixture at Wembley, kicking off at 7.45pm BST, is their first competitive match since securing third place at the 2026 World Cup. The clash with Spain is expected to test Tuchel’s squad depth and tactical approach following that tournament.

Ngumoha’s omission follows a period where other young players have also faced changes in their international involvement. Tuchel recently issued warnings to Cole Palmer after a withdrawal from the squad, indicating a focus on discipline and readiness within the England setup.

The Liverpool teenager will continue training with the senior squad and remain part of England’s plans as they look to balance experience and youth across their Nations League campaign.
