Rick Renfro's eyes welled up with tears when his son Jake committed to the University of Illinois football team in January 2026. It was a moment 40 years in the making, as Jake joins the Illini as a transfer from Wisconsin, following in his father's footsteps on the gridiron.
Rick Renfro played for the Illini in the 1980s, winning a Big Ten title in 1983 and playing in the 1984 Rose Bowl. Now, Jake plays offensive line, projected to start at center for Illinois. The younger Renfro had a lot of other opportunities, but he said, "I don't want to talk [to other teams], I want to come [to Illinois.] This is where I want to be, Dad. This is our family. This is our home."
Rick, and some of his Illini teammates from four decades ago, had season tickets for many years while Jake was growing up. The father-son duo have been to plenty of games in Champaign together. Rick believes it's the right decision from a football perspective, citing head coach Bret Bielema as "the real deal."
Jake Renfro is set to start his seventh and final year of college football, a fitting end to his collegiate career. He opted to follow head coach Luke Fickell from Cincinnati to Madison. Now, he's back in the Midwest, where his family has a long history with the Illini.
Rick Renfro has nothing but praise for Bielema, saying, "We put our trust in him, and I couldn't be happier." Jake echoes his father's sentiments, saying, "It's such an honor to be playing at the same program [my dad] got to play in 40 years ago now."
