The Boston Red Sox have lost their newly acquired catcher Jake Rogers to the Chicago White Sox just days after trading for Baltimore Orioles star Adley Rutschman.
Rogers was designated for assignment by the Red Sox to open up a roster spot for Rutschman, but he was claimed off waivers by the White Sox on Thursday. He will join the 40-man roster and be selected to the major league club for their series against the Detroit Tigers.
Rogers was originally DFA'd by the Tigers on July 28, and his journey to the White Sox has been a wild one. He went to the Orioles a few days after being DFA'd, and then to the Red Sox, before finally landing in Chicago.
The 31-year-old catcher has appeared in 373 total big league games, slashing .199/.272/.381 with 47 home runs and 140 RBIs. His value lies more in his catching defense, having posted 10 fielding run value over his career.
Rogers will now help the White Sox try to figure out their pitching staff during their series against the Tigers. The White Sox are currently sitting at 63-58, third place in the American League Central.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox are thriving under their new catcher Adley Rutschman. They are currently sitting at 65-56, third place in the American League East, and are comfortably in the second spot in the Wild Card standings.
Rutschman came off the injured list on Tuesday and will start for the Red Sox, with Connor Wong serving as his backup. The Red Sox are looking to continue their strong stretch in the second half of the season, and Rutschman's addition has been a key factor in their revival.
The Red Sox will face off against the Pittsburgh Pirates in a crucial matchup on Friday, and it will be interesting to see how Rutschman performs in his first full game with the team.
