Rafael Devers returned to Fenway Park on Friday for the first time since the Boston Red Sox traded him to the San Francisco Giants in June 2025.
Since Devers' relationship with the Red Sox, particularly with chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, didn't end particularly well, it could be reasonably assumed that fans might not greet the three-time All-Star warmly.
But he received a mixed reaction from the Fenway crowd with boos largely overpowering cheers during pregame introductions and when he took his first at-bat. Batting second in the Giants' lineup, Devers struck out looking on four pitches from Boston starter Sonny Gray.

Resentments understandably linger after Devers was traded largely because of the tension he created by refusing to move from third base to designated hitter when Boston signed Alex Bregman as a free agent. But with Bregman being a far superior defensive player, Devers eventually ceded and played at DH.
However, the possibility of switching positions came up again when first baseman Triston Casas ruptured his patellar tendon and the Red Sox needed someone to replace him at the position. Devers seemed a natural fit as a defensively challenged slugger.
But he balked at being asked again to play another position during the season. Devers criticized the Red Sox front office for not doing their jobs in trying to find a first baseman and not being truthful with him about being a DH, then asking him to play first base.
"I don't understand some of the decisions that the GM makes,” Devers told reporters, including MassLive’s Christopher Smith . “Next thing you know, someone in the outfield gets hurt, and they want me to play in the outfield. I think I know the kind of player I am. And yeah, that's just where I stand."
Just over a month later, Devers was traded to the Giants, who took on the remaining eight years and $254.5 million on the 10-year deal he signed with Boston before the 2023 season. Soon thereafter, he agreed to play first base for the Giants, adding to the notion that his issue was with Breslow and the Red Sox front office.
In his two seasons with San Francisco, Devers has a .241/.331/.466 slash average with 45 home runs, 46 doubles and 120 RBI. With Boston, he had a .279/.349/.510 slash line with 215 homers, 273 doubles and 696 RBI in nine seasons.
Devers' return to Fenway was marked by boos from the crowd, a stark contrast to the cheers he would have likely received in the past. The Red Sox fans' negative reaction is a testament to the lingering resentment towards Devers following his departure.
With the Red Sox currently struggling in the standings, Devers' return to Fenway served as a reminder of the complexities of player relationships and the challenges that come with managing a roster.
