Mauricio Pochettino has agreed to continue as USMNT head coach through 2030, defying the common belief that he would depart after the 2026 World Cup.

In 2024, he said he didn't feel the need to push players too hard to represent the USMNT, stating "A player needs to want to play for the national team." One such player is Noahkai Banks, a 19-year-old defender who has been in camp with the USMNT but wavered ahead of the World Cup. Banks, who plays for Augsburg, may have made the World Cup roster, but turned down a March call-up after admitting he was considering switching to Germany.
Pochettino's pursuit of Banks will be a priority, given the US issues at center back. Losing a blue-chip teenage prospect would be a major blow to the team's development.

Taishi Brandon Nozawa, a 23-year-old goalkeeper, may be a longshot to ever play for the US, but is worth pursuing at a position where the USMNT is currently hurting. Nozawa was born in Japan and has only been involved with Japan at the international level, but may have an easier path to international playing time with the USMNT.
