Planet Sport has launched Sportword, a daily football-themed word game that challenges players to guess sport-related words within six attempts. The game, hosted on Planet Football, builds on the site’s existing football quizzes and offers a new way for fans to engage with the sport through word puzzles.
Players start with a clue and enter their first guess, after which each letter tile changes colour to show whether the letter is in the correct position, elsewhere in the word, or not in the word at all. A green tile means the letter is correctly placed, orange means the letter is in the word but in the wrong position, and grey indicates the letter does not appear in the word. Users have six tries to find the right answer.
A hint button becomes available from the fourth attempt, but only to logged-in users. Clicking it reveals one letter tile to help narrow down the options. There is also a “Give Up” option for those who want to stop trying and see the answer immediately, though Planet Sport notes it is not aimed at purists who prefer to solve the puzzle unaided.
Sportword includes a leaderboard that ranks players based on the number of attempts and the time taken to guess the correct word. This adds a competitive element for those who want to track their progress and compare with others.
While the football version is the first to launch on Planet Football, Planet Sport has plans to expand the concept to other sports. There is already a daily Formula 1 version available on PlanetF1. Rugby, rugby league, and tennis editions are in development. Additionally, a forthcoming games hub will allow logged-in users to play multiple categories and sub-categories each day, such as 2000s Premier League players.
Planet Sport is also working on creating a new home for Sportword and its other sport games and quizzes, aiming to centralise the experience. For now, players can access the daily football word game directly on Planet Football and are encouraged to bookmark the page to return daily.
The introduction of Sportword adds to the hundreds of quizzes already offered by Planet Football, including type-in-the-answer and complete-the-football-line-up quizzes. It offers a fresh, interactive format that combines football knowledge with puzzle-solving skills.
The latest confirmed update is the availability of the daily football game on Planet Football with the leaderboard and hint features active for logged-in users, with plans to roll out new sport versions and a dedicated games hub soon.
