Bruno Damiani scored twice after Milan Iloski equalised, all during a man advantage, as Philadelphia Union beat Chicago Fire 3-1 on Wednesday night. The victory extended Philadelphia’s unbeaten run to 14 matches, setting a new club record and marking their eighth straight win.
The match turned decisively after Chicago’s Jack Elliott received a second yellow card in stoppage time of the first half, reducing the Fire to ten men. Before the sending off, Chicago had taken the lead through Maren Haile-Selassie’s strike in the 44th minute. Assisted by Noah Allen and Jonathan Bamba, Haile-Selassie netted his 11th goal of the season, putting the hosts ahead going into halftime.
Philadelphia equalised early in the second half when Iloski scored in the 49th minute. The 18-year-old striker has been in fine form, scoring six goals in his last four games, bringing his season total to 18. Iloski’s equaliser came from assists by Damiani and defender Frankie Westfield.
Damiani then put the Union ahead in the 55th minute, with Cavan Sullivan setting up the move for his league-record 14th assist of the season. Sullivan, who turned 17 this year, now holds the MLS record for teenagers with 21 goal contributions. Iloski also assisted Damiani’s first goal, while Jovan Lukic provided the assist for Damiani’s second strike, scored in the 67th minute to seal the win.
Philadelphia’s defensive resilience showed as goalkeeper Andre Blake made three saves to keep the Fire at bay. Chicago’s Chris Brady recorded four saves but was unable to prevent the defeat, which ended Chicago’s three-match winning streak.
Under interim coach Ryan Richter, Philadelphia’s form has turned dramatically. Since Richter replaced Bradley Carnell during the World Cup break at the end of May, the Union have gone 12-0-2, climbing from last place in the Eastern Conference to sixth. Their unbeaten streak began after a 6-4 loss at Inter Miami on May 24.
The Fire, who started the day in fourth place, dropped to 9-5-1 at home with the loss. Philadelphia improved to 5-7-2 on the road.
Philadelphia will host Charlotte FC on Saturday, while Chicago travels to face the New England Revolution.
