Waldemar Anton was born in Uzbekistan and moved to Germany with his family as a child. He came through Hannover 96 and made his Bundesliga debut for the club before joining VfB Stuttgart in 2020.
At Stuttgart he became captain and led the club to a remarkable second-place finish in 2023/24. His performances earned him a Germany call-up and a place in the Euro 2024 squad.
Borussia Dortmund signed him in 2024. He is a physically strong, reliable centre-back who can also play at right-back.
Playing style
Anton is a reliable, physically strong defender who can play at centre-back or right-back, and in a back three or four. He is dominant in the air, tough in the tackle and reads danger well, which allows him to defend large spaces. With the ball he is calm and tidy rather than adventurous, usually playing simple passes into midfield. At Stuttgart he captained a young team to a remarkable second-place finish in 2023/24, ahead of Bayern Munich, showing leadership as well as consistency. Those qualities made him an attractive signing for Dortmund.
International career
Anton was born in Uzbekistan but grew up in Germany and represented Germany at youth level. His form at Stuttgart earned him a senior call-up, and he was part of Germany’s squad at Euro 2024, where the hosts reached the quarter-finals.
Career in numbers
Anton’s senior club career, which began in 2015/16, has so far brought 359 appearances and 15 goals for 3 clubs. His best scoring return came in 2025/26: 3 goals in 44 appearances for Borussia Dortmund. So far in 2026/27 he has made 7 appearances for Borussia Dortmund.
