Marcel Sabitzer began his career at Admira Wacker in Austria and moved to RB Leipzig in 2015. He spent six years there, captaining the club and helping them reach the 2020 Champions League semi-finals.
He joined Bayern Munich in 2021 and won two Bundesliga titles, then had a loan spell at Manchester United before moving to Borussia Dortmund in 2023. At Dortmund he was one of the best players on the run to the 2024 Champions League final.
Sabitzer is a hard-working midfielder with a strong shot from distance, and a regular for Austria.
Playing style
Sabitzer is a hard-working, versatile midfielder with a powerful shot from distance. He presses relentlessly, covers a lot of ground and is comfortable on the ball in tight areas. He can play as a central midfielder, attacking midfielder or on the wing. His long-range goals have been a feature throughout his career, and his experience of big games, including a Champions League semi-final with Leipzig and a final with Dortmund, makes him valuable. He is also a leader in the dressing room.
International career
Sabitzer made his Austria debut in 2012 and has won more than 80 caps. He played at Euro 2016, Euro 2020 and Euro 2024, where Austria topped a group containing France and the Netherlands before losing to Turkey in the last 16. He is one of the leaders of the Austria team under Ralf Rangnick.
