Biography

Lucas VΓ‘zquez built his career by accepting every challenge placed in front of him. He was never guaranteed a starting place, never arrived with the reputation of a superstar and rarely received the attention given to some of his teammates. Yet season after season, he earned his place through hard work and reliability. Whether playing as a winger or filling in at right-back, he approached every role with the same commitment. Managers trusted him because they knew he would give everything for the team, regardless of the occasion or the position he was asked to play.

VΓ‘zquez was born on July 1, 1991, in Curtis, Galicia, Spain. He joined Real Madrid’s academy in 2007 after beginning his football with local clubs in Galicia. Life at Valdebebas was demanding, and he spent years working through the different youth levels before earning a place with Real Madrid Castilla. His route to the first team was far from straightforward. In 2014, he joined Espanyol on loan in search of regular football. The move proved to be exactly what he needed. Consistent performances in La Liga convinced Real Madrid to activate the buy-back clause in his contract the following year.

His return to Madrid marked the beginning of a remarkable spell with the first team. Under Rafael BenΓtez and later Zinedine Zidane, VΓ‘zquez became one of the squad’s most dependable players. He accepted every role without complaint, often starting on the wing before later adapting into a full-back when injuries left the squad short of defenders. His versatility became one of his greatest strengths. Over the years, he helped Real Madrid win multiple La Liga titles, Copa del Rey trophies, Spanish Super Cups and several UEFA Champions League crowns, making valuable contributions even when he was not a regular starter.

As the squad evolved, VΓ‘zquez remained an important figure because of his experience and professionalism. Younger players looked to him as someone who understood what it meant to represent Real Madrid. His willingness to work without the ball and his ability to perform in different positions made him a valuable option for every coach. During successful domestic and European campaigns, he regularly stepped into the starting line-up whenever injuries or suspensions created opportunities, delivering dependable performances that kept the team moving forward.

One moment that supporters still remember came in the 2016 UEFA Champions League final against AtlΓ©tico Madrid. With the match level after extra time, VΓ‘zquez took the first penalty for Real Madrid in the shootout. He struck the ball with complete confidence, setting the tone for the rest of the team as Madrid went on to lift the trophy. It was a pressure-filled moment, yet he handled it with remarkable composure. That penalty reflected the qualities that defined his career: calmness, confidence and a willingness to take responsibility when his team needed him most.

After spending nearly two decades with Real Madrid, VΓ‘zquez left the club in 2026 as one of its most respected squad players. He made more than 400 appearances and collected an extraordinary list of honours, including multiple Champions League and La Liga titles. While others often attracted the headlines, VΓ‘zquez earned admiration through consistency and selflessness. His career showed that success at Real Madrid is not reserved only for the biggest stars. Sometimes it belongs to the player who is always ready, always reliable and always willing to put the team first.
