Pearland HS football brothers drive 6-0 Oilers with strong team bond and standout performances

When Royce Swan sprinted toward the end zone against Alvin High School last season, his touchdown celebration had an unexpected moment. His older brother, RJ Swan Jr., a senior center for Pearland High School, heard someone say, "That's my brother." Royce recalled that moment as "pretty cool to see that," capturing the bond between the two siblings who are integral parts of the Pearland Oilers’ undefeated 6-0 start.

RJ, committed to Minot State in North Dakota, anchors the offensive line, while Royce, a junior, is closing in on 1,000 rushing yards this season with 13 touchdowns. The brothers rarely disrupt each other during games, RJ said, explaining, "We don't really talk after every play because he's out there doing his thing. I'm not going to bother him in the game." Still, once they’re off the field, RJ offers advice. "After the game at home, I'm like, 'You should have come right here,' and he'll be like, 'No bro, it was open.'"

Their sibling rivalry spills over into track and field, where Royce runs the 100 meters and competes in shot put against RJ. Royce reached two regionals this year and even beat RJ in the shot put, a feat RJ said "stung a little bit." Royce enjoyed the victory, saying, "Yes, that felt pretty good," while RJ admitted, "We're brothers, so I go cheer him on."

The Swan brothers’ connection extends beyond their own relationship to the entire team. They organize gatherings every Sunday where offensive linemen and some defensive players meet at their house to watch film and prepare game plans. RJ said, "We just talk all day, and we get the game plan ready." This off-field camaraderie contributes to the Oilers’ strong start and their bond as a team.

Pearland’s upcoming schedule includes games against Alvin, Sam Rayburn, and a significant district matchup with Shadow Creek. RJ acknowledged the pressure from the community, saying, "The whole community backs us up, they expect a lot out of us, and we just want to go out there and prove them right."

Royce echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the pride in representing Pearland. "It's really just a privilege to play for this team," he said. "Everybody wants to be an Oiler; the whole community wants to be a part of us, and they're ready for a 16-game season."

The Oilers’ record and the Swans’ performances have become a focal point for Pearland High’s football environment. Their interplay on the field and commitment to team preparation off it reflect a deeper connection within the squad and the local community. The brothers remain focused on the season ahead, with the next challenge against Alvin on the horizon.
