Late Monday night, Christian Gonzalez agreed to a four-year, $135 million extension with the New England Patriots, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz. The deal makes the 24-year-old the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history and the highest-paid player in Patriots franchise history, surpassing the four-year, $104 million contract ($63 million guaranteed) that defensive lineman Milton Williams signed during free agency in March 2025.
Gonzalez is now one of just two cornerbacks in NFL history to reach a deal worth more than $130 million. Seattle Seahawks star Devon Witherspoon signed a four-year, $132 million extension last month, which briefly made him the highest-paid player at the position. Gonzalez's deal edges that figure by $3 million.
The contract caps a negotiation that has been public since the first day of training camp, when Patriots owner Robert Kraft revealed the team had put a record-setting offer on the table.
"We love Christian Gonzalez," Kraft said at the time. "We love him as a player, as a person. That's why we've made an offer to him that makes him the highest-paid player ever to play that position in the NFL, and coincidentally, it's the highest contract in the Patriots franchise history. Gonzalez entered his fourth NFL season eligible to sign an extension on his rookie contract. The Patriots picked up his fifth-year option in the offseason, and the Oregon product reported to training camp with negotiations ongoing.
The cornerback arrived in New England as the Patriots' first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, but his rookie season was cut short after just four games due to a torn labrum and dislocated shoulder. He returned in 2024 to suit up 16 times, recording 50 solo tackles and two interceptions and earning second-team All-Pro honors.
Last season, a hamstring injury suffered in preseason kept him out until Week 4. Gonzalez still appeared in 14 regular-season games and posted a career-high 69 total tackles and 10 pass deflections. He also earned his first Pro Bowl selection.
His most significant moment came during the Patriots' run to Super Bowl LX. In the AFC Championship game against the Denver Broncos, Gonzalez made a game-clinching interception off quarterback Jarrett Stidham late in the fourth quarter, sealing New England's trip to the Super Bowl. The timing of the deal adds a layer of symmetry. The Patriots and the Seahawks will open the NFL season on Wednesday night in Seattle, meaning Gonzalez and Witherspoon, the two cornerbacks who now hold the top two contracts at the position, will share a field within days of both deals being finalized. Gonzalez will face a Seattle offense that features Witherspoon on the other side of the ball, a matchup that now carries a combined $267 million in contractual weight.
For the Patriots, the extension locks down the cornerstone of a secondary that carried the team through last season's playoff run. For Gonzalez, the deal confirms what Kraft suggested months ago: the franchise sees him as its defining defensive player for the foreseeable future. The contract also resets the market at the position, with Witherspoon's brief reign as the highest-paid cornerback lasting just over a month before Gonzalez took the title back.
