Northwestern opens $875M Ryan Field with 35,000 seats and new Wildcat Wall student section

Northwestern opened the doors of its new $875 million Ryan Field on October 1, unveiling a 35,000-seat stadium that replaces the previous venue demolished in 2024. The Wildcats hosted Penn State in front of a sold-out crowd, kicking off a fresh chapter for their football program.

The new Ryan Field is smaller than its predecessor, which held 47,310 fans, but the design focuses on proximity and atmosphere. Pat Ryan Jr., CEO of Ryan Sports Development, told USA TODAY Sports in November 2025 that the stadium’s “worst seat is only 136 feet from the sidelines,” with sightlines better than many basketball arenas, including Chicago’s United Center. He described the venue as more comparable in size to a baseball stadium, allowing for a more intimate and engaging fan experience.

One of the most distinctive features of the stadium is the “Wildcat Wall,” a standing-room-only student section in the south end zone. This 2,000-capacity area has a steep 33-degree incline and a 65% slope, borrowing from European football supporter culture. Ryan Jr. said in May that former USC quarterback and Fox analyst Matt Leinart was impressed by the energy the Wildcat Wall generates, even when empty. “No one’s ever imported a supporter section from European football to create a student section,” Ryan Jr. added, noting the passion European fans bring to their stadiums.

The construction of Ryan Field faced challenges, pushing its budget from an initial $862 million to $875 million due to weather delays and inflation, according to The Chicago Tribune. Despite the cost increase, it remains the most expensive college football stadium ever built. The majority of the funding came from the Ryan family, who envisioned a bold, modern venue to elevate the Wildcats’ home environment.

Since the original Ryan Field was torn down, Northwestern played home games at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium, a temporary lakeside facility on Lake Michigan. The transition back to the new stadium came amid rising expectations for the Wildcats under head coach David Braun. Northwestern’s recent upturn includes a road win at Penn State last season and a narrow loss to defending national champion Indiana in a thrilling fourth-quarter finish.

The Wildcats’ upcoming home schedule at the new venue includes matchups against Ball State, Rutgers, No. 14 Iowa, and Illinois. The Penn State game on October 1 kicked off at 8 p.m. ET, with the Nittany Lions arriving after a loss to unranked Wisconsin under new coach Matt Campbell.

Ryan Field’s design aims to deliver more than just football. Ryan Jr. described it as a stadium suitable for concerts and other events, promising an experience unlike any other college stadium. The project’s scale and ambition have drawn attention across the sports world, with many curious to see how the Wildcat Wall influences the atmosphere.

Northwestern Athletics shared images of the Wildcat Wall from a recent run-through, revealing the seatless, steeply tiered student section looming over the south end zone. This feature is unique in college football and reflects a deliberate effort to energize fans and intimidate opponents.

The new Ryan Field opens as the Wildcats continue their climb in the Big Ten, combining on-field progress with a significant upgrade in their home environment. The stadium’s debut game against Penn State marks the start of what Northwestern hopes will be an exciting era for its football program.
