Arsenal have secured Mikel Arteta’s future with a new contract that will keep the manager at the club until 2030, following their Premier League title win last season. The Spaniard’s previous deal was due to expire this summer, but an agreement on improved terms was finalised earlier this month, BBC Sport confirmed.
Arteta’s new deal raises his salary from £10m per year to an undisclosed figure above that, including an additional £5m in bonuses. The club had benchmarked his value against top managers such as Diego Simeone of Atletico Madrid, who reportedly earns over £20m annually, and Pep Guardiola, the former Manchester City boss.
“This club is unique, its character and the way it makes you feel, and I have a great sense of privilege that our journey together will continue,” Arteta said in a club statement. “We have already built a special bond and created memories that will last a lifetime, and what is so exciting is that this is only the beginning of what we can achieve together.”
Arteta took charge of Arsenal in December 2019 and has since led the team to a Premier League title and an FA Cup victory. The Gunners came agonisingly close to European glory, losing the Champions League final to Paris Saint-Germain in May. That near miss has only increased Arteta’s determination to build on the progress made since his arrival.
Arsenal co-chairmen Stan and Josh Kroenke expressed their pride in the manager’s work. “We share a special bond with Mikel. We are so proud of everything we have achieved since he returned to the club in 2019,” they said. “He has a deep understanding of Arsenal’s values and carries them in his heart. He knows what this club means to everyone connected to it and is committed to building on everything we have achieved together.”
Discussions over Arteta’s contract carried extra weight this season because of the impending expiry date, but the manager had been clear about his intention to remain beyond the end of the campaign. His focus is on establishing a sustained period of success at Arsenal, an ambition partly fuelled by the disappointment of the Champions League final.
With the new contract in place, Arsenal have secured the foundation of their recent rise in English and European football. The club’s leadership sees Arteta as central to their plans, and the extended deal offers stability as they aim to build on last season’s achievements. The announcement closes a chapter of uncertainty around the manager’s future and signals a long-term vision for the club under his guidance.
