Florida State’s Mike Norvell named ACC coach of the week after dominant Virginia win

Florida State head coach Mike Norvell received the ACC coach of the week honour after leading the Seminoles to a commanding 38-7 victory over Virginia. The recognition came just days after Norvell was identified by CBS Sports as a coach under intense pressure, with his job security in doubt if Florida State failed to beat Virginia.

The Seminoles entered the game as underdogs, but Norvell’s team quickly overturned expectations. After conceding an early touchdown, Florida State scored 38 unanswered points to secure their first Power Four win of the season. Quarterback Ashton Daniels had a remarkable game, rushing for 136 yards and setting a program record with five rushing touchdowns. Florida State’s total offence reached 464 yards.

Defensively, the Seminoles were dominant. They recorded 10 sacks and limited Virginia to 205 total yards, including just 37 on the ground. This performance helped Florida State improve to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in ACC play, providing Norvell a much-needed boost amid mounting scrutiny.

CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz announced Norvell as the ACC coach of the week, noting the turnaround in perception after a week filled with questions about Norvell’s future. The victory over Virginia was widely seen as critical to Norvell’s chances of remaining the Seminoles’ head coach beyond the current season.

Norvell’s team will look to build on this momentum when they face Louisville on Friday, October 9, in another important ACC matchup. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on ESPN.
