Texas A&M coach Mike Elko lauds freshman KJ Edwards after dominant 34-7 win over Arkansas

Texas A&M ended a two-game losing streak in SEC play with a 34-7 victory over Arkansas on Saturday, powered by a dominant rushing attack and improved quarterback play. The Aggies rushed for 231 yards and scored four touchdowns on the ground, while starting quarterback Marcel Reed passed for 170 yards and averaged 8.9 yards per completion.

Freshman running back KJ Edwards stood out in the win, rushing for 161 yards and two touchdowns at an average of 6.5 yards per carry. Edwards’ quickness and vision excelled in Texas A&M’s zone-based running schemes, and he also showed the ability to contribute in pass protection, picking up blitzes during the game.

Coach Mike Elko praised Edwards during Monday’s press conference ahead of the Aggies’ upcoming game at No. 14 Missouri. “We wouldn’t play him if we weren’t comfortable. Credit him for rising to the challenge. Credit Troop [Taylor] for making sure he’s ready,” Elko said. The coach emphasized that Edwards must “be able to do it all” to stay on the field, noting his blocking performance against the Razorbacks.

Edwards has impressed with his overall skill set, and many fans believe he should replace Rueben Owens as the starting running back. Owens is currently averaging 4.2 yards per carry this season, less than Edwards’ 6.5 yards per carry. Still, Elko will make the final decision on the starting role.

After the win, Edwards acknowledged the positive relationship he has with Elko, offensive coordinator Trooper Taylor, and the rest of the staff. He said that connection made his decision to commit to Texas A&M an easy one. Edwards is considered a near certainty to take over as the full-time starter next season, if not sooner.

Texas A&M’s offense looked more cohesive against Arkansas, with a balance between the run and pass that had been missing in recent losses at home to Kentucky and on the road against LSU. The Aggies’ defense also held Arkansas to just seven points, helping secure the decisive victory.

Texas A&M will face Missouri at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, with the game airing on ABC. The Aggies will look to build on their dominant performance in Arkansas as they continue their SEC schedule.
