North Carolina football's general manager Michael Lombardi has been placed on leave, sparking a probe into the program's operations.
Chancellor Lee Roberts has addressed the controversy, expressing disappointment that the issue is overshadowing the team's preparations for the upcoming season. "I'm disappointed that we're talking about this," Roberts said. "We should be focusing on our student athletes and on their success on the field … so it's distressing to me and everyone else in the administration entrusted with leadership at this remarkable university, that this is something that we have to have to spend time on."
The investigation comes as the Tar Heels begin preparations for the 2026 season under head coach Bill Belichick. Belichick has expressed confidence in the team's preparation, citing the upcoming season opener against TCU in Dublin, Ireland.
The university's athletic spending continues to rise, with a record $188 million spent on athletics during the 2024-25 academic year. Football accounted for the largest share of that spending, including coaching salaries, benefits, and bonuses. Despite the rising costs, the football program generated a $14 million profit.
Belichick addressed the media on the first day of practice, keeping the tone light despite the off-field issues plaguing the program. "We're working through some things," Belichick said. "We're at a particular time of year now where there are certain things that are in play and certain things that aren't in play that won't happen until later in the calendar year at some other point."
ESPN's David Hale reported that the issue revolves around an HR dispute for someone who was let go by Lombardi, where there's an internal investigation that's ongoing, and that's where the suspension comes from.
Lombardi joined Belichick at UNC in December 2024, reuniting with the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach. He worked under Belichick with the New England Patriots from 2014 to 2016 and earlier with the Cleveland Browns beginning in 1987.
The Tar Heels open their second season under Belichick on August 29 against TCU in Dublin, Ireland. UNC officials have not provided additional details about the investigation, and questions remain about its potential impact on the football program.
The university's Board of Trustees discussed several issues on Thursday, including athletic spending. Roberts emphasized the importance of focusing on the student-athletes and their success on the field. "I know Coach Belichick is the most successful coach in the history of the sport. I know he's focused on getting the team ready for the season," Roberts said.
As the investigation continues, the university remains tight-lipped about the details. The future of Lombardi's contract and the potential impact on the football program remain unclear.
