Miami Hurricanes claimed the No. 1 spot in the AP Top 25 Poll for the first time since 2002 after edging out Florida State 43-35 in double overtime on Saturday. The victory brought Miami’s record to 6-0, prompting AP voters to elevate the Hurricanes to the top position.
The game against Florida State was tightly contested, with Miami sealing the win on a decisive interception in the second overtime period. This win snapped a long wait for the Hurricanes to return to the top of the college football rankings, a position they last held during the 2002 season. That year, Miami began as the No. 1 team, briefly dropped to No. 2 before reclaiming the top spot the following week. They eventually finished second after a double-overtime loss to Ohio State in the BCS National Championship.
BYU moved up to No. 2 in the latest AP Top 25, marking their highest ranking since their national championship-winning season in 1984. Ohio State secured third place after a recent win over Indiana. Notre Dame fell to fourth following a loss to BYU, with Georgia rounding out the top five. Indiana climbed to sixth in the rankings.
Among other undefeated teams, Texas Tech took the eighth spot, UCLA came in ninth, and Utah settled at tenth. James Madison, despite also being undefeated, remained in the “others receiving votes” category. Kentucky moved up to 12th, placing just ahead of Alabama, the only team to have beaten Kentucky this season. Texas dropped to 19th after consecutive losses, while Boise State stood as the sole non-power conference team in the top 25, ranked 21st with a 5-1 record.
Although the No. 1 ranking in the AP Poll is significant, Miami’s attention will soon turn to the College Football Playoff rankings, which are set to be released on November 3. The Hurricanes will aim to extend their unbeaten run to 7-0 when they face Pittsburgh this Saturday.
