Cars rolled onto the 2.19-mile street course in Markham, Ontario, on Saturday morning after a day's delay due to the promoter's preparation issues.
The IndyCar series resumed practice at the new street course, which has been the site of the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham this weekend. The 12-turn layout is a departure from the usual Exhibition Place in downtown Toronto, where the series has raced for 37 of the last 40 years.
IndyCar president Doug Boles expressed disappointment over the promoter's inability to complete the track build on time. "IndyCar is incredibly disappointed that our promoter was not able to complete the track build on time, despite significant support from our team on site," Boles said in a news release. He added that the series joins in the frustration of its loyal fans and apologizes for the inconvenience.
The promoter, Green Savoree Racing Promotions, needed to receive and install the necessary tire packs for the tire barriers in runoff areas. The delay allowed other support series to complete their practice sessions on Saturday morning, including USF 2000, USF Pro 2000, and NASCAR Canada.
The IndyCar series has another practice session scheduled for 2:30 pm before qualifying at 6:30 pm. The race is set to begin at noon on Sunday.
