Louisville Loses 2 Key Guards Ahead of 2026-27 Season

Seth Trimble, a highly touted guard who was announced as a new Louisville Cardinal just days ago, is now ineligible to play due to a court ruling.

The 10th Circuit granted the NCAA's request for a stay in Wisne v. NCAA, putting Judge Sweeney's nationwide injunction on hold pending appeal. This means that qualifying Class of 2022 athletes currently lose the federal protection for a fifth season, leaving Trimble without the eligibility to play.

Trimble committed to the Cardinals on August 12 and was officially welcomed to the team on August 21. The timing of the court ruling is awkward for Louisville, as the team had announced Trimble's signing just before the news broke.

Trimble spent four seasons at North Carolina and averaged 14.0 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.0 assists last season while earning honorable mention All-ACC honors.

The loss of Trimble is compounded by the news that London Johnson, another key guard, has been kicked off the team due to a violation of team rules. Johnson committed to Louisville in October 2025 but redshirted last season after previously playing for the NBA G League Ignite.

With neither Trimble nor Johnson available, reserve Isaac Ellis could be asked to take on a larger role as Louisville's backup point guard. However, the situation with Trimble's eligibility may still change before the season begins.

The loss of two key guards ahead of the season is a significant blow to the Cardinals, who were expected to be a strong contender in the upcoming season. The team will now have to regroup and adjust their strategy without two of their top players.
