Astros eye trades for Mariners ace Logan Gilbert and outfield boost after 2026 playoff sweep

The Houston Astros are targeting significant trades this offseason after an 81-81 season that ended with a sweep by the Chicago White Sox in the American League Wild Card Series. The team’s early postseason exit has exposed clear needs in both starting pitching and outfield speed and production, prompting calls for more than minor roster tweaks.

A major deal under consideration involves acquiring Mariners ace Logan Gilbert. Entering his final year before free agency, the 29-year-old right-hander posted a 12-11 record with a 3.73 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 205 strikeouts in 186 innings during 2026. Over his career, Gilbert has logged a 3.60 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, and 1,089 strikeouts across 1,021 1/3 innings. Pairing him with Astros starter Hunter Brown would give Houston two reliable postseason starters and ease the strain on a rotation that endured injuries and used a franchise-record 18 starters last year.

Seattle would demand a substantial return for Gilbert given the divisional rivalry. The Mariners reportedly want infielder Xavier Neyens, right-hander Ethan Pecko, and outfielder Joseph Sullivan. Neyens, Houston’s No. 2 prospect, offers left-handed power, while Pecko is close to major league ready and Sullivan adds outfield depth. The Astros’ farm system is thin, and trading Neyens, who ranks among MLB’s Top 100 prospects, would be a steep price. Still, Gilbert addresses an immediate rotation need if Houston can extend him past 2027.

The Astros are also eyeing a boost to their outfield with a potential trade for Jarren Duran from the Boston Red Sox. Duran’s stock fell sharply in 2026 as he hit .207 with a .266 on-base percentage and .361 slugging, though he still managed 20 home runs and 21 stolen bases over 151 games. This represents a drop from his 2024 breakout season when he batted .285 with an .834 OPS, 21 homers, and 34 steals.

Houston would send outfielder Logan Hughes, their No. 3 prospect, and right-hander Bryce Mayer to Boston in exchange. Duran’s speed, power, and experience in left and center field would add an element missing from Houston’s offense—a lineup currently lacking in speed and dependable outfield production. The Astros would take on the risk of Duran’s 165 strikeouts and .627 OPS in 2026, hoping a change of scenery and different hitting approach can revive him. He remains under team control for two more seasons.

These moves would not come cheap but respond to two glaring weaknesses. The Astros’ offense needs more speed and base-running threat beyond its core of Yordan Alvarez, Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, and Jeremy Peña. Meanwhile, the rotation requires stability, which Gilbert could provide immediately.

Houston’s willingness to trade top prospects for established talent indicates a strategy focused on competing in 2027 rather than rebuilding. Adding Gilbert would shore up the starting staff, while Duran offers a chance to inject speed and versatility into the lineup. The Astros must decide if they can commit to extending Gilbert and if Duran can rebound from a disappointing season.

After a 2026 campaign marked by injuries and an early playoff exit, Houston appears ready to make bold moves this offseason. Talks with Seattle and Boston are unconfirmed, but the Astros’ intent to pursue these trades reflects an urgency to address their most pressing needs.
