Liverpool's Rio Ngumoha celebrates scoring against Wrexham in the 1-0 win at Yankee Stadium (Mike Stobe)
Liverpool won their second straight match under new coach Andoni Iraola as they beat Wrexham 1-0 in a pre-season friendly at Yankee Stadium in New York on Wednesday.
Liverpool's profligacy in front of goal was not a problem in New York, as teenage forward Rio Ngumoha found the net from close range in the 75th minute.
The victory followed a 4-2 win over Sunderland in Nashville on Saturday, Iraola's first match in charge since the former Bournemouth manager replaced the sacked Arne Slot.
The absence of several key players, including Joe Gomez, Jeremy Jacquet, and World Cup stars Ryan Gravenberch, Florian Wirtz, and Alexander Isak, did not seem to hinder Liverpool's progress.
Iraola had hinted that some of these players could return for the final game of Liverpool's US tour, against Leeds at Chicago's Soldier Field on Sunday.
Wrexham, on the rise in recent years under the ownership of Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, arrived at Yankee Stadium after pre-season victories over Manchester United and Leeds.
Phil Parkinson's side was looking to continue their impressive form, but ultimately came up short against a determined Liverpool side.
The win was a welcome boost for Liverpool ahead of their return to domestic action, and will give Iraola's side confidence as they prepare for the new season.
Liverpool's next match is against Leeds at Chicago's Soldier Field on Sunday, a game that could provide further clarity on the team's progress under Iraola's leadership.
