LeBron James impresses at Sixers’ South Philadelphia scrimmage as training camp intensifies

LeBron James took to the court for a scrimmage with the Philadelphia 76ers in South Philadelphia on Saturday, delivering a performance that reflected his intense approach to training camp at age 41. Though the event was low-stakes, James’ energy set a clear tone for the team’s work ethic as they prepare for the season.

Sixers President Mike Gansey praised James’ intensity, noting how the veteran star was diving for loose balls and pushing hard despite his age. “I’ve been in a lot of training camps, and I mean the intensity, LeBron’s diving on the floor for loose balls, he’s 41 years old,” Gansey said. “Stuff like that, he has really set the tone, and everyone’s been doing the same. And like you’ll see today, guys are gonna really want to compete with each other.”

The scrimmage itself was a mix of moments designed for fan engagement and serious competition. Early on, some transition dunks helped build energy, but the group soon settled into a businesslike style of play. Rookie Labaron Philon stood out with active hands and tenacity, matching up against veterans like James and Jaylen Brown. The offense balanced unselfish ball movement with occasional isolation plays, while defense showed signs of focus and communication.

LeBron’s impact was visible in limited minutes. He threw several alley-oop lobs and drained multiple perimeter jumpers. One standout play was a behind-the-back pass to VJ Edgecombe in the opposite corner, a pass that would have been the day’s best assist if Edgecombe had converted the shot.

Attention also fell on Joel Embiid, who has spent the offseason slimming down and improving his fitness. The scrimmage offered a glimpse of a more mobile and engaged Embiid than in recent years. He played extended minutes and was active on both ends of the floor, including hedging high near halfcourt and serving as a short-roll passer out of ball screens. Gansey confirmed Embiid’s full participation in every drill and practice since training camp began.

James compared Embiid’s current condition to their time together in the 2024 Olympics. “The reps have picked up from 2024 from the Olympics. We had some chemistry, we played a lot of minutes, he started a lot of games for us,” James said. “The difference between ’24 and now, he’s so much more healthier. He hasn’t missed a practice, been in damn near everything that we’ve done, pretty much they’ve had to sit him out at times, even when he wanted to keep going. So it’s been good, it’s actually been great.”

Embiid’s health and availability during training camp could influence the team’s trajectory significantly. The Sixers have struggled in the past when their star big man missed extensive early-season practice time. This year, the opportunity to build chemistry and cohesion before the regular season is clearer than ever.

Sacrifice has been a recurring theme since media day, though the players and coaching staff differ on how to frame it. LeBron welcomed the idea of sacrifice as part of the process, while head coach Nick Nurse expressed discomfort with the term. Embiid emphasized the importance of maximizing opportunities instead of worrying about sacrifice. “Everybody keeps talking about sacrificing, I don’t really see that as sacrificing,” Embiid said. “It’s just being the best version of yourself… Roles don’t even matter; it’s just about making the right play for each other over and over and over, finding a way to be, I think for me, more efficient than you’ve ever been… we all got each other’s back, we move on, we go get a stop.”

The scrimmage and training camp have so far reflected a group with clear ambitions. James looks physically fresh, Embiid is moving better, and younger players are stepping up. The 76ers are building momentum through hard work and shared focus as they prepare for the season ahead.
