Philadelphia Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson retires after 14 NFL seasons

Philadelphia Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson announced his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday after 14 seasons. The 34-year-old posted a brief message on Twitter simply saying, "Thank you," confirming reports that he would not return to the field this season.

Johnson was a surprise inactive in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Rams, with the Eagles citing “personal reasons” for his absence. His decision to retire comes amid a difficult stretch for the Eagles, who have lost offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland and traded wide receiver AJ Brown during the off-season. Injuries have also affected key players, including DeVonta Smith and Saquon Barkley.

Johnson spent most of his career as one of the NFL’s best right tackles, anchoring Philadelphia’s offensive line. The Eagles went 18-28 in games where Johnson played, a record that reflects the team’s struggles in recent years but also his consistent presence. His departure leaves a significant gap on the right side of the line.

The Eagles currently sit at 2-2 and are preparing for a Week 5 trip to London to face the Jacksonville Jaguars. The next NFC East clash against the New York Giants is scheduled for Week 9, after the Giants’ Week 8 bye. This timing offers Philadelphia’s division rivals a chance to scout their likely replacement.

Rookie right tackle Markell Bell, a 22-year-old third-round pick from Miami, appears set to take over Johnson’s position. Bell was a college teammate of Giants defensive end Sisi Mauigoa, which could give New York’s pass rushers extra insight into his playing style ahead of their matchup.

Johnson’s retirement adds to the changes reshaping the Eagles’ roster and coaching staff this season. The team will now look to Bell and the rest of the offensive line to protect quarterback Jalen Hurts as they aim to regain footing in a competitive NFC East.
