San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was not at fault in a recent Palo Alto crash that left him with severe injuries.
A state database reveals that Shanahan, 46, was holding and using a cellphone at the time of the July 14 crash on Alma Street, but the 21-year-old woman driving the other vehicle made an unsafe turn while driving in the opposite direction.
The California Crash Reporting System, a statewide database of collisions, lists the woman's actions as the probable cause of the accident. Neither Shanahan nor the woman was cited for the incident.
The crash occurred at 6:12 p.m. on Alma Street and Hamilton Avenue, near downtown Palo Alto, with both parties wearing seatbelts and airbags deploying in their vehicles. The posted speed limit on the street is 25 mph.
Neither driver was found to have been drinking at the time of the crash, according to the database. The woman, driving a blue 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300, was headed north on Alma Street, while Shanahan, driving a black 2023 Tesla Model S, was headed south.
The 49ers reported to training camp on Saturday, but Shanahan has not returned to full-time duties due to concussion symptoms. Assistant head coach Chris Foerster and the team's coordinators are filling in for him.
Shanahan has been observing team drills from 30 yards behind the defense, wearing a cast on his left hand and sunglasses. General manager John Lynch said the team will let doctors dictate Shanahan's return to work.
The woman involved in the crash was reportedly unhurt, according to Palo Alto police. The crash was first reported by ESPN on Saturday, which detailed Shanahan's severe injuries, including a concussion, a broken left hand, a broken nose, three broken ribs, and a facial laceration that required 40 stitches.
NBC Sports analyst Chris Simms, a close friend and college teammate of Shanahan, said the coach nearly lost his right eye in the crash. Simms was surprised the news was not made public until Saturday.
Palo Alto police Lt. Nicholas Martinez declined to provide specific details of the crash, citing that collision reports are not subject to public disclosure. Martinez also confirmed that neither driver was cited or suspected of being impaired.
The 49ers are currently in training camp, with Shanahan's status uncertain as he continues to recover from his injuries.
