Kelvin Sampson reveals ESPN is filming five-part docuseries on rookie Kingston Flemings

Kingston Flemings returned to San Antonio this week not just for an exhibition game with the Atlanta Hawks but for a ceremony that saw his high school jersey retired at Brennan High. The event drew a crowd of 200 to 300 people, including former teammates, family, and Houston Cougars head coach Kelvin Sampson, who made the three-hour drive from Houston with his children to attend.

Sampson revealed at Houston Cougars Media Day on Thursday that ESPN is filming a five-part documentary series on Flemings, which partly explains his visit to Brennan High. "ESPN's doing a five-part documentary on Kingston, and part of the documentary is [spending] a lot of time getting interviewed and filmed and all that stuff," Sampson said. "Part of it, I think, has got to be at Brennan High School. So I think that's what they told him and how they got him there."

The network did not respond to requests for further details about the documentary, but ESPN has a history of profiling NBA rookies, with series like "NBA: Year One" and "Declared."

Flemings, who led Brennan to the Class 6A state semifinals as a senior and was named the 2025 Gatorade Texas Boys Basketball Player of the Year, played one season with the Houston Cougars. During that year, he earned consensus Second-team All-American honors and was selected First-team All-Big 12. The Hawks picked him eighth overall in the 2026 NBA Draft.

The jersey retirement ceremony was an emotional night. Sampson said Flemings cried two or three times during the event. "These kids aren't just players to us, they're family," Sampson added. "So when Kingston has an event like that, as soon as I walked in, the first thing I did was go give his grandmother and grandfather on his mother's side a hug. Then I went and gave his grandmother on his father's side. They're all part of our family."

The next day, Flemings put on a strong performance in the Hawks’ 123-116 exhibition win over the San Antonio Spurs, scoring 15 points and registering 5 assists, 3 rebounds, and 3 steals in just 20 minutes.

Fans in Houston will get another chance to see Flemings play when the Hawks visit the Houston Rockets on October 26 in the NBA season’s second week. Meanwhile, the ESPN documentary remains the latest development in chronicling Flemings’ transition from Texas high school star to NBA rookie.
