Kansas City Chiefs extend perfect NFL start to 5-0 with dominant win over injury-hit Chargers

Kansas City Chiefs extended their perfect NFL start to 5-0 by dismantling an injury-hit Los Angeles Chargers 22-6 on Sunday, controlling the game from start to finish. The Chiefs never faced a serious challenge as the Chargers struggled without key players and failed to mount any sustained offensive threat.

The first half was dominated by Kansas City. The Chiefs outgained the Chargers 268 yards to 103 and held Los Angeles quarterback Justin Herbert to just 45 passing yards. Herbert threw one interception, no touchdowns, and posted a 22.9 passer rating. The Chargers’ offensive line was severely depleted, missing both starting tackles, which contributed to Herbert’s limited effectiveness. The defense of the Chiefs ensured Herbert had almost no time to operate, shutting down the Chargers before they could get going.

The Chiefs’ offense looked different from previous seasons, largely due to the impact of Kenneth Walker III. Walker, a free agent addition who was Super Bowl MVP with the Seattle Seahawks, scored two rushing touchdowns in the first half and had reached 100 yards on the ground by midway through the third quarter. His running provided a new dimension to the Chiefs’ attack and relieved some pressure from Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes threw an interception into the end zone to end one first-half drive, and Walker was stopped on fourth-and-goal inside the 1-yard line in the second half, but these moments didn’t alter the outcome. Kansas City controlled the game in all phases. After the goal-line stand, the Chargers had to punt from their own 1-yard line. Although the Chiefs fumbled the punt return, their defense quickly forced another three-and-out. The Chargers’ offense failed to find any rhythm throughout the game.

Last season, the Chiefs finished with a 6-11 record, and Mahomes suffered a torn ACL late in the campaign, raising questions about the team’s future. This week’s performance suggests the Chiefs are back on track. The defense played well, and the offense’s reshaped look, with Walker carrying a significant load, is already paying dividends.

Despite Kansas City’s dominance, the second half saw a slight dip in their performance. The offense slowed down, but the Chargers, missing star safety Derwin James Jr. and receiver Ladd McConkey—who left early in the game with a concussion—were in no position to take advantage. The Chargers remain without a win this season at 0-6, fighting through injuries and underperformance.

The AFC continues to have several strong teams, including the Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, Jacksonville Jaguars, and New England Patriots. After six weeks, however, Kansas City stands alone as the only undefeated team in the conference, adding quiet pressure as the season progresses.
