Kallum Watkins joins England squad as Morgan Smithies withdraws with injury ahead of World Cup opener in Perth

Kallum Watkins will join England’s Rugby League World Cup squad in Perth after Morgan Smithies withdrew with an injury picked up in training. The Leeds Rhinos second-row forward, 35, is set to bolster the squad ahead of their opener against Tonga on Saturday, although he will not feature in that match.

Smithies, who plays as a lock and second-row forward and is due to join Perth Bears for the 2027 NRL season, pulled out at the last moment, dealing a blow to England’s preparations. Head coach Brian McDermott said: "It's really unfortunate what has happened to Morgan with an injury picked up in training. Morgan has been great since we entered camp. He's a real team player and his work ethic and toughness are qualities that we will certainly miss."

Watkins’ call-up is a familiar choice for McDermott, who coached the Leeds Rhinos during a successful period when Watkins was a key player. The second-rower has earned 32 caps for England and is appearing at his fourth World Cup after previous stints in 2013, 2017, and 2022. McDermott added: "Kallum enjoyed a terrific season with Leeds this year and has been part of our England performance programme building into this World Cup. I look forward to welcoming him into camp as we step up our preparations."

Originally a centre, Watkins transitioned into the pack in recent years and brings experience and versatility to England’s squad. He will join the team in Perth ahead of their group matches against France and Papua New Guinea, where he is expected to take the field.

England face Tonga in their World Cup opener on Saturday at 10:05 BST. Watkins’ arrival comes as the squad adjusts to the loss of Smithies, who had been a consistent presence since the training camp began. The squad is continuing to prepare for their opening fixtures as the tournament progresses.
