Liverpool's 18-year-old defender Ifeanyi Ndukwe has been a hot commodity in the transfer market, with several clubs from Portugal, Spain, and the Netherlands reportedly interested in taking him on loan for the 2026/27 season.
Iraola's centre-back conundrum
Liverpool's centre-back problems have been exacerbated by the injury to Joe Gomez in the first game of preseason against Sunderland in Nashville. With Giovanni Leoni recovering from his ACL injury and Jeremy Jacquet only just coming back into the reckoning, the Basque tactico has been forced to rely on Mor Talla Ndiaye, an 18-year-old from Senegal, and Ndukwe, who cannot play this season due to a work permit hiccup.
Loan offers pour in
According to a report in Heute, teams are now queuing up to sign Ndukwe on loan. "One thing is certain: there is significant interest in the Austrian talent," the report reads. Liverpool's sporting director Richard Hughes will have to find a club to take Ndukwe on loan for the campaign ahead.
Liverpool's loan history
Liverpool have benefitted in the past from sending promising young talents out on loan. Players like Conor Bradley, Lewis Koumas, and James McConnell have all thrived in loan spells, which could be the case for Ndukwe if he is sent out on loan. Clearly, the original plan would have been to keep Ndukwe in and around the first team for the season, but that has now been derailed.
Ndukwe's future
A return to Austria is also considered a possible option for Ndukwe, who completed a £2.5m deal to join Liverpool from Austria Vienna following a stellar FIFA under-17 World Cup campaign last winter. With several clubs interested in taking him on loan, it remains to be seen where Ndukwe will end up for the 2026/27 season.
