Giants acquire J.J. McCarthy from Vikings after Jaxson Dart’s season-ending knee injury

The New York Giants have added J.J. McCarthy to their quarterback room after acquiring him from the Minnesota Vikings for a 2027 fifth-round pick, a steep drop from the first-round price initially sought by Minnesota. The trade was announced on September 28, pending McCarthy’s physical, and comes just days after Giants starter Jaxson Dart suffered a season-ending knee injury.

McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 draft, expressed surprise at the sudden move. “When I got the call here, it was a shock,” he told reporters. “I didn’t anticipate it, but at the end of the day, it’s an opportunity. It’s an opportunity to take advantage of. And I love these guys already and I can’t wait to do it for them.”

The 21-year-old quarterback missed his entire rookie season due to a knee injury but started 10 games last year, completing 57.6% of his passes for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. However, McCarthy lost his starting job in Minnesota to Kyler Murray and then Carson Wentz, which left him searching for a fresh start.

The Giants’ need for a new quarterback intensified after Dart suffered a knee injury on the opening drive of their Week 2 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Dart had begun the season well, completing 23 of 29 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns in Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys. His injury required surgery and will sideline him for the remainder of the regular season.

Talks between the Giants and Vikings reportedly began the same day Dart’s surgery was confirmed, according to NFL reporter Tom Pelissero. The Giants moved quickly to fill the void, with McCarthy joining the team and immediately entering the quarterback competition behind Jameis Winston and Jake Haener.

In his first open practice with New York, McCarthy ran third in quarterback drills. Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy praised his quick adaptation to the Giants’ offense, highlighting his readiness despite the abrupt change of scenery.

Meanwhile, Jameis Winston has taken over as the Giants’ starting quarterback. In their 12-7 Week 3 win over the Tennessee Titans, Winston went 14 of 22 for 118 yards without throwing a touchdown or turnover. Giants head coach John Harbaugh confirmed Winston as the Week 4 starter.

The quarterback shake-up comes as the Giants face further challenges. They lost pass rusher Brian Burns to a torn ACL, adding pressure on the team’s defense and offense alike. The Giants (2-1) will host the Arizona Cardinals (1-2) this Sunday. Arizona comes off a 36-30 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, making this matchup significant for both teams seeking early momentum.

McCarthy’s arrival offers the Giants depth behind Winston, but the situation remains fluid given Dart’s injury and the team’s recent personnel losses. For now, McCarthy waits for his opportunity to prove himself in New York.
