Jimmy Rogers Breaks Down His Season So Far
Jimmy Rogers, the head coach of Iowa State football, has spoken about the importance of his team being vulnerable and comfortable with each other in order to be successful on the field.
The Iowa State head coach met with the media on Wednesday, where he discussed his holistic approach to developing his players as both individuals and football players. Rogers emphasized that for his players to be the best version of themselves, they need to feel comfortable in their own skin and be willing to share their struggles with each other. "If you always have a mask up on like 'I'm fine, I'm fine, I'm fine' and you nobody knows what's going on in your life, at times you don't know what they're living through and you can't break through with football information because they have other things going on," Rogers said.
Rogers also talked about the importance of special teams in football, stating that it's a third of the game and that the team needs to play their best players on those units. He mentioned that punter Aiden Flora will be carrying the load on punt returns, as it's a niche position that requires a player who is comfortable with being uncomfortable. "You lose a punt, you get a punt blocked, I should say, you can lose a game in a heartbeat," Rogers warned.
The head coach also spoke about the retirement of Jamie, his predecessor, who had a career spanning over 20 years at Iowa State. Rogers praised Jamie for his dedication to the university and for hiring great people, including himself. "He got me in the door, and that's all I can ask for," Rogers said. "I'm forever in [his] debt."
Rogers also touched on the challenges of coaching in college football, where the rules are constantly changing. He emphasized the importance of focusing on the things that matter and finishing what you started. "You have to focus on the things that matter and finish what you started," Rogers said. "For me, I love solving problems. That's what my life is right now."
As the team heads into the second week of fall camp, there are still many starting jobs up for grabs.
