Jalen Hurts Takes Center Stage as Eagles Training Camp Heats Up

Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles offense introduced more movement and under-center play-action concepts in their second training camp practice, Thursday at the Jefferson Health Training Complex. The competitive session lasted for approximately 1 hour, 33 minutes, showcasing the team's adaptability and growth.

The Eagles' offense is beginning to take shape under new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion, who is adjusting the structure around Hurts. The team periods featured several under-center play-action looks, providing a glimpse into Mannion's vision. Pre-snap motion, such as Makai Lemon's motion into the backfield, created confusion and allowed Tank Bigsby to run untouched through the middle.

Jalen Hurts and Dontayvion Wicks produced the play of the day, with Hurts delivering a deep throw to Wicks downfield. The completion required Hurts' placement and timing, as well as Wicks' concentration and strong hands. This play demonstrates why Wicks could earn a significant role behind DeVonta Smith.

Tank Bigsby continues to demand a larger role, producing notable plays in each of the first two practices. He displayed his burst on another long run Thursday, scored during a team period, and caught a pass from Hurts over the middle. The Eagles must determine how to use Bigsby without disrupting Saquon Barkley's workload.

The pass rush controlled long stretches of the practice, maintaining a significant presence. This is encouraging for a unit attempting to establish its rotation around Jonathan Greenard, Nolan Smith Jr., Jalyx Hunt, Arnold Ebiketie, and A.J. Epenesa. Fangio has mentioned Epenesa multiple times during the offseason, highlighting his experience and ability to align at different spots.

DeVonta Smith and Quinyon Mitchell are setting the tone in their individual matchups, with Smith beating the All-Pro cornerback on a well-placed pass from Hurts despite tight coverage. These competitive repetitions benefit both stars, with Smith facing one of the NFL's best young cornerbacks and Mitchell receiving daily work against an elite route runner.

The Eagles continue rotating their backup quarterbacks, with Andy Dalton opening the second-team work during seven-on-seven drills and Tanner McKee taking over during an 11-on-11 period against the starting defense. This rotation matches Nick Sirianni's declaration that Philadelphia has not selected Hurts' backup.

Cole Payton endured a difficult practice, throwing three interceptions, including two on consecutive seven-on-seven attempts. Payton will need to learn from these mistakes and develop his skills further in the coming days.
