Jake Gagne and Yamaha to decide 2026 MotoAmerica Superbike title this weekend

The 2026 MotoAmerica Quad Lock Superbike Championship will be decided at New Jersey Motorsports Park from September 25 to 27, with 75 points available over three races and four riders still in contention. Sean Dylan Kelly leads the pack with 279 points, followed by Bobby Fong on 253, Mathew Scholtz with 233, and JD Beach at 230. None of the contenders have won a premier Superbike title before, guaranteeing a first-time champion this weekend.

Kelly, riding the BMW M 1000 RR for OrangeCat Racing, holds a 26-point advantage over Fong. The 24-year-old Floridian has finished on the podium in 13 of 15 races this season, including three wins. His approach at NJMP will likely focus on managing his lead rather than pushing for outright victories. A strong finish near the front would secure the championship for Kelly and deliver a second consecutive title for BMW, following Cameron Beaubier’s 2025 success with Tytler’s Cycle.

Fong, racing for Attack Performance Progressive Yamaha, has been impressive recently with six podiums in the last seven races and three wins in the last five. He knows the New Jersey circuit well, having won the season opener there last year. However, crashes in the subsequent two races hindered his title chances then. This time, Fong will look to capitalize on his familiarity with the track and recent form to close the gap on Kelly.

Mathew Scholtz, riding the Yamaha YZF-R1 for Strack Racing, sits 46 points behind Kelly but retains a shot at the title. Scholtz has won four races this season, matching Fong’s tally and edging Kelly by one win. Should the championship come down to a tie, that could prove important. But a win for Kelly would equalize their victories while extending his lead.

JD Beach, also on a Yamaha with Attack Performance Progressive, faces the toughest challenge. At 49 points behind Kelly, he would need to win all three races and rely on his rivals to falter to have a chance at the crown. Beach’s recent form includes a double victory at Laguna Seca, showing he cannot be counted out entirely.

The triple-header at NJMP begins with Race 1 on Saturday at 3:12pm ET, followed by Race 2 on Sunday at 12:12pm ET, and the final race at 3:12pm ET the same day. With 75 points at stake, each rider’s performance over the weekend will be critical in determining who lifts the 2026 MotoAmerica Superbike trophy.

Kelly’s lead puts him in control, but Fong and Scholtz’s multiple wins this season set up a compelling battle. Beach’s double win at Laguna Seca adds an element of unpredictability. The Thunderbolt Circuit will host the moment when a new premier Superbike champion emerges.
