Inter Miami returns from World Cup break with awful own goal, but pull out win over Chicago Fire
It took Inter Miami just 17 and a half minutes to concede the most embarrassing goal of the season in their first match back after the World Cup break.
A pass back from defender Ian Fray to goalkeeper Rocco Ríos Novo turned into a howler of an own goal. The pass was ill-advised, with Lewandowski already in the penalty area, and Ríos Novo whiffed on the ball while appearing distracted by the approaching striker.
The goal was especially bad for Ríos Novo, who had not played since March 14. Miami opted to start him against Chicago over usual starter Dayne St. Clair, who had posted some rough performances before the break.
The start to the season was not what Inter Miami had hoped for, missing their Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi and his teammate Rodrigo De Paul. However, Luis Suárez helped erase the poor start with goals in the 27th and 51st minute.
Chicago's Puso Dithejane later scored to tie the game, which set up Preston Plambeck to play the hero in the 87th minute of a 3-2 Miami win.
The match was Inter Miami's first since May 24 and the results keeps them second in the Eastern Conference at 10-4-2 (34 points). Nashville is the only club ahead of them at 12-3-1.
The win is a much-needed boost for Inter Miami, who will look to build on this momentum as they face their next challenge. With Messi and De Paul set to return soon, the team will be looking to make a strong push for the top of the Eastern Conference.
