Giants lose to Twins at Oracle Park, Bo Davidson suffers injury

San Francisco Giants’ Christian Koss attempted a bunt single with two outs and men on the corners in the fourth inning against the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday, but the play failed to produce a run in a 4-2 loss at Oracle Park. The decision came amid a lineup depleted of power hitters like Rafael Devers and Willy Adames, who are on the injured list, forcing the Giants to rely on speed and small-ball tactics.

The bunt misfire effectively handed the Twins the series and ended the Giants’ chance at a winning home record this season. San Francisco fell to 37-41 at Oracle Park, with just three games left in the regular season, all against the division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers.

Koss’s bunt was not a sacrifice, given the two-out situation, but it reflected the Giants’ strategy this year, which includes 40 sacrifice bunts—the third-highest total in Major League Baseball and the most for the franchise since 2016. San Francisco’s 16-28 record in one-run games also remains the worst in the league, underlining the challenges the team faces in close contests.

The Giants managed only five hits throughout the game, while the Twins’ offense picked up steam after Koss’s failed bunt. In the fifth inning, Ben Ross tripled off Giants reliever Cesar Perdomo with one out. Luke Keaschall followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2. The Twins then added two more runs in the seventh off the Giants’ bullpen to seal the victory.

Keaschall also contributed the only home run of the game, a solo shot to left field in the third inning on a 1-2 slider from Perdomo. The Twins’ power display came at a time when the Giants’ home run production has dipped. San Francisco has hit just 23 homers this month, their lowest monthly total since April, when the lineup got off to a slow start.

Among the Giants’ remaining power hitters, Osleivis Basabe and Victor Bericoto each have five home runs this season. Basabe, however, sat out Wednesday’s game with a leg injury sustained the previous night and is considered questionable for the upcoming series against the Dodgers. Bericoto maintains a home run percentage of 4.9, ranking third on the team behind Devers and Casey Schmitt.

The Giants’ struggles extend beyond offense. Outfield prospect Bo Davidson left the game early after injuring his lower leg when he slammed into a foul ball. Davidson appeared to be in significant pain but was evaluated by the training staff and managed to finish that at-bat, as well as play two innings in the field before exiting the game. The team has not yet provided an update on the severity of his injury.

The game also saw Giants outfielder Brett Harris fail to reach a foul ball hit by Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers in the fourth inning, a moment captured in photographs but ultimately not decisive in the game’s outcome.

With the Giants’ depleted roster and key players sidelined, the team’s reliance on small-ball and speed has become more pronounced, though it has yet to translate into consistent wins. Their upcoming series against the Dodgers will test whether the current lineup can overcome injuries and close out the season on a stronger note.
