Coco Gauff made a statement with the US Open approaching, dominating Jessica Pegula 6-2, 6-4 to win her first title of 2026 at the WTA 1000 in Cincinnati.
Gauff's victory marked her second Cincinnati crown, following her first win in 2023. The 20-year-old American has been on the rise since her breakthrough season in 2023, when she claimed her first two Grand Slam titles at the US Open.
She claimed her first WTA title since last October in Wuhan, having come up short in finals in Miami and Rome this year. Gauff's win over Pegula gave her a 5-5 record in their head-to-head matches.
The match was a one-sided affair, with Gauff breaking Pegula twice for a 4-0 lead and holding serve to pocket the opening set after 34 minutes. The second set was more of the same, with Gauff breaking on the way to a 3-0 lead and Pegula playing catch-up.
Pegula, coming off a hard-fought win over defending champion Iga Swiatek, had no answer for Gauff's speed and aggression. The 30-year-old American was left to rue her missed chances, holding serve and clawing back a break before Gauff broke again to seal the win.
Gauff polished off the victory on her first match point to conclude 12 days of tennis at the sprawling Midwest venue. The win gave her a much-needed boost ahead of the US Open, which begins next Sunday in New York.
Gauff's win marked the first all-American WTA final in Cincinnati since 1970, when Rosie Casals beat Nancy Richey. The American pair's dominance in the tournament was a testament to the growing strength of the US women's tennis team.
