Garaway’s football team opened their Inter-Valley Conference schedule with a 49-16 win over Tusky Valley on Friday, Sept. 25, bouncing back from a loss to Girard the previous week. The victory pushed Garaway’s record to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while Tusky Valley fell to 3-3 and 0-1.
Despite the comfortable scoreline, Pirates head coach Jason Wallick expressed disappointment in his team’s performance compared to their showing against Girard. “Anytime you can play the way we played and still get a win, it’s pretty important,” Wallick said. “It was a big letdown from last week through the way we played last week. A win’s a win. We’ll take it, but we’ve got a long way to go if we’re going to reach our goals.”
Wallick pointed to execution as the main area where his team fell short. “Last week was a completely different level. We had a step back tonight in that area,” he added. The coach said the preparation was not up to their usual standard, suggesting a hangover effect from the previous Friday night’s game.
Garaway’s offense continued its strong form, scoring at least 35 points for the fifth straight game and topping 40 points in four of those contests. “We’ve had some big plays, which is key,” Wallick said. “We want to do some tempo stuff, and I thought our guys handled that really well tonight.”
However, the coach warned that mistakes like misassignments, missed signals, and errors in reading keys could become costly in tougher matches. “Those are things that will come back and bite you in big games, and that’s stuff we have to clean up,” Wallick said.
Injuries have forced other players to step up, and Wallick urged his team to focus on their own roles rather than trying to compensate for absent teammates. “We have to eliminate mental mistakes. We might have some guys that are trying to do too much instead of being them. When you’re missing people to injuries, people want to fill those spots, but we just have to continue being us, and we will get better.”
The win came at Garaway’s home field in Zoarville and marked a solid start to their conference schedule despite the uneven performance. Wallick emphasized the need for consistent preparation moving forward: “We now have self-motivation. Every week we approach our opponents as nameless and faceless, and this week our preparation wasn’t up to the standard it usually is.”
Tusky Valley struggled to contain Garaway’s offense for much of the game. Their defense allowed nearly 50 points while the offense managed just 16, leaving them searching for answers as conference play gets underway.
Garaway will look to build on this result with a sharper performance next week, while Tusky Valley tries to bounce back from their first conference loss.
