Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury will meet in the ring at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on 11 December for their long-awaited heavyweight showdown. The fight, which has been more than a decade in the making, will be broadcast globally on Netflix.
The timing of the bout is set to cater to US audiences, with organisers considering a late-night start in the UK, potentially in the early hours of Saturday morning. Joshua and Fury are scheduled to face the media at a news conference in London on Wednesday, 30 September, kicking off the promotional campaign for one of the most anticipated British boxing events in recent memory.
Joshua, 36, expressed his feelings on social media ahead of the announcement, writing on Instagram, "I am inspiring a generation." The fight is being promoted through a collaboration between Saudi boxing figure Turki Alalshikh’s The Ring and UFC president Dana White.
Alalshikh described the event as “one of the biggest fights in boxing history,” adding, “Two of the best heavyweights of this generation, finally in the ring together.” Both fighters, former two-time world champions, had signed contracts earlier this year, but the venue and date were not confirmed until now.
Cardiff emerged as the final choice after other venues, including London’s Wembley Stadium and New York’s Madison Square Garden, were considered but ultimately set aside. Joshua had pushed for the fight to take place in the UK, a wish that was fulfilled with the selection of the Principality Stadium.
Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, acknowledged the role of the British public in making the fight happen, saying, "Forever indebted to the UK public for their support of Anthony Joshua. We couldn't have got this over the line without you."
The Principality Stadium has experience hosting late-night boxing events, most notably Joe Calzaghe’s fight against Mikkel Kessler in November 2007, which began at 01:00 GMT.
More details about the fight’s undercard and ticket sales have yet to be announced. The news conference on 30 September will give a first official look at the fighters together and is expected to set the tone for the December clash.
The event represents a collaboration between major boxing and mixed martial arts figures, combining The Ring’s Saudi backing and UFC’s Dana White, whose involvement signals a high-profile cross-sport promotion.
Fans and local businesses in Cardiff have reacted positively to the news of the fight taking place in their city, with reports of excitement growing as the date approaches.
The announcement confirms the date and venue only days ahead of the fighters’ first public encounter, setting the stage for a buildup that could span more than two months ahead of the long-awaited heavyweight duel.
