Welsh Fire Suffer Narrow Defeat, Exit Competition at Hands of Spirit

Welsh Fire's hopes of progressing to the knockout stages of The Hundred were effectively over before their final group phase match against London Spirit in Cardiff. The team finished their campaign four points behind Manchester Super Giants and Sunrisers Leeds, who are second and third respectively, with four wins from eight matches.

Welsh Fire's elimination from the competition was sealed by their narrow six-run defeat to London Spirit, with the visitors needing 15 runs to win from eight balls with six wickets in hand. However, they lost Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Rachin Ravindra in quick succession, and Marco Jansen's attempt to level the score with a six from the final ball was thwarted by a catch from Jamie Overton.

Sent out to bat first, London Spirit never fully gained momentum against the Fire bowlers, who produced a disciplined display to restrict the visitors to 131-8 in Cardiff. Jonny Bairstow's 34 from 19 balls provided the early impetus for Spirit, while James Coles and Jamie Overton also added 29 and 21 respectively.

However, none of the Spirit batsmen were able to convert their starts into a substantial innings, with Chris Woakes and Jansen picking up two wickets apiece. Despite being eliminated from the competition, Welsh Fire will look to regroup and rebuild for the next season.

Meanwhile, the Manchester Super Giants can still qualify for the Eliminator at the expense of Sunrisers Leeds if they defeat Birmingham Phoenix by a significant margin today. The competition takes a brief break on Thursday before the knockouts start on Friday, with the men's and women's Eliminator matches scheduled to take place at The Oval.

The finals at Lord's will follow on Sunday, with Trent Rockets' men's and women's sides awaiting the winners of the Eliminators. Fans can follow ball-by-ball commentary on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, BBC Sounds, and the BBC Sport website and app.
