Fermin Aldeguer has surgery on fractured hand after Indonesian GP crash, Australian GP debut uncertain

Fermin Aldeguer has had surgery on a fractured metacarpal bone in his right hand following a crash at the Indonesian Grand Prix, but it remains uncertain if he will compete at next weekend’s Australian GP.

The Gresini rider broke the base of his first metacarpal during a crash on Lap 2 at Turn 16 while running fourth. Aldeguer slid off his Desmosedici and reportedly fractured his hand when it struck the tarmac. MotoGP Medical Director Angel Charte confirmed the diagnosis at the circuit, stating the injury required surgery.

The operation took place in Barcelona, where screws were used to repair the break. Aldeguer updated fans via social media, confirming the procedure went well and that he was “OK.” Despite the successful surgery, Gresini Racing has not provided a recovery timeline, leaving his participation at Phillip Island from October 23 to 25 in doubt.

This injury came after a difficult weekend for Aldeguer. He qualified sixth and finished seventh in the sprint race, but the crash marked his third fall of the event. The Indonesian GP was held at Mandalika, the circuit where Aldeguer earned his first MotoGP victory in 2025.

The fractured hand is Aldeguer’s third significant injury this season. He suffered a broken left femur in a practice crash near Valencia in January, which forced him to miss the Sepang and Buriram tests as well as the season opener in Thailand. Michele Pirro replaced him during that event. Later, Aldeguer fractured a vertebra at Assen in late June, causing him to sit out the Sachsenring and Silverstone rounds. Iker Lecuona took his place at Silverstone.

With the Australian GP less than two weeks away, Gresini Racing faces a decision on whether to field Aldeguer or bring in a replacement rider. No official word has been given on their plans.

Aldeguer’s injury-plagued 2026 season now includes a metacarpal fracture, a broken femur, and a vertebra injury, all of which have interrupted his campaign at various points. The team’s next updates will likely come as the Australian GP approaches.
