Manchester City are on their pre-season tour of Hong Kong and Seoul, but the question on everyone's mind is who will be the new club captain. Former winger Mark Kennedy thinks Erling Haaland has what it takes to lead the team.
Former Manchester City winger Mark Kennedy believes Erling Haaland is the perfect candidate to take on the captaincy role.
City have jetted off for their pre-season tour of Hong Kong and Seoul, but Enzo Maresca is yet to name the new club captain.
Speaking to BBC Radio Manchester, Kennedy said: "Every time I watch City I see a leader [in Erling Haaland]. I see someone driving the team forward and someone not giving up. Every time I watch City, he catches my eye in terms of his leadership qualities."
During the 2024-25 campaign, Haaland captained Guardiola's side on occasions, but was not named the outright skipper for his side.
In the past decade, Manchester City have had several captains under Pep Guardiola, including Vincent Kompany, David Silva, Fernandinho, Ilkay Gundogan, Kyle Walker, and Bernardo Silva.
Kennedy's support for Haaland as captain is not without its reservations, however. As a forward, Haaland's role in the team means he is not always involved in organizing the defense.
He added: "When you're attacking in the final third, as a defender and a goalkeeper, you're still organising your back four, whereas when you're a forward and there are things going on at the opposite end, you're not actually doing much."
This raises questions about the suitability of a forward as captain, and whether Haaland's leadership qualities outweigh his limitations.
Haaland's leadership qualities have been evident on the pitch, but the decision to name him captain will ultimately rest with Enzo Maresca.
Fans will be eager to see who will be given the armband, and whether Haaland will be the man to lead City to another successful season.
