Duval County reverses dismissal of Raines volleyball players who boycotted Fernandina Beach match

Several Raines High School girls volleyball players who were removed from the team after choosing not to play against Fernandina Beach High School have been reinstated, Duval County Public Schools announced following a review. The decision to dismiss the students came after the players opted out of a match amid allegations of racist behavior involving Fernandina Beach High School.

The controversy began after a September volleyball match between Fernandina Beach and Andrew Jackson High School, where two students from Fernandina Beach were seen holding a Black baby doll in the air and chanting. Those actions led to disciplinary measures against the two individuals. The incident sparked tension, with several Raines players deciding to boycott their upcoming match against Fernandina Beach in solidarity with Andrew Jackson.

Action News Jax first reported earlier this month that the Raines players were given an ultimatum: either participate in the match or face removal from the team. The choice to exclude them from the squad was initially made at the school level and later reviewed by the district.

One parent of a reinstated Raines player, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to concerns over future repercussions for her daughter’s athletic opportunities, expressed lingering unease about how the situation was handled. “Show me where in the handbook if a child missed the game or so forth, they’re off the team,” she said. The parent explained that her daughter’s decision to boycott came after researching the allegations online. “She got online and read everything that was going on. So I didn’t have to make that decision for her. She wanted to stand for what was right. And she felt that she wanted to stand with Jackson,” the parent added.

On October 1, Duval County Public Schools informed Action News Jax that the dismissal decision was under district review. After considering additional information that had not been available initially, the district reversed the decision and reinstated the student-athletes.

In a statement, DCPS said, “Following a district review and in consideration of additional information that was not available at the time of the initial decision, the student-athletes have been reinstated. The review determined that a series of miscommunications contributed to the initial decision, and the review allowed for a more informed decision to be made.”

When asked about the district’s reversal, the parent questioned the motivation behind it. “Was it genuine or was it because of the attention?” she asked. Despite her doubts, she expressed hope that the situation might encourage others to act according to their beliefs. “Sometimes you have to do what’s right, regardless of the consequences. I couldn’t let her just go and play in that game, knowing the backstory of it,” she said.

Duval County Public Schools emphasized that student well-being remains a priority and stated its commitment to handling concerns with care and transparency.

The Raines volleyball team played a district match on Monday night as their season approaches its conclusion. The reinstatement allows the previously dismissed players to continue participating as the team finishes out the schedule.
