Rookie quarterback Drew Allar made an instant impact in his NFL preseason debut, scoring three touchdowns in a 28-9 win over the Green Bay Packers.
Allar entered the game in the third quarter, taking over for Mason Rudolph and Will Howard, who got the start and a brief stint on the field, respectively. On his first throw, he found fellow rookie Kaden Wetjen for a 75-yard gain that nearly resulted in a touchdown.
Two plays later, Allar finished the job with a 3-yard rush for a touchdown. His second touchdown, and first passing TD of the night, came on the next drive, with Allar pushing the Steelers offense 89 yards down the field before finding Wetjen in the end zone.
The Steelers' third-round draft pick from Penn State completed 10 of 13 passes for 153 yards, earning the best QBRating of the three quarterbacks in the game. Pittsburgh selected Allar after an inconsistent college career, but it became clear that he would serve as a developmental chip in the QB room with Aaron Rodgers set to finish his NFL career with the team this season.
The Steelers are working to improve Allar's game right away, reportedly adjusting his throwing mechanics soon after he arrived in Pittsburgh for offseason workouts. Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy highlighted the need for improvement in Allar's footwork and overall accuracy rate in May.
Allar's performance was a welcome sight for Steelers fans, who have been eagerly anticipating the development of their young quarterback. His three touchdowns in the preseason opener suggest that he could be a viable option for the team's starting role in the future.
The Steelers' next preseason game is set to take place on August 21, 2026, against the Baltimore Ravens.
