Former Grainger basketball coach Doug McBee died in a tractor accident on his farm on July 20, at the age of 73.
Doug McBee initially taught at Rutledge High School before it rebranded to Grainger in 2008. He was an assistant coach for both boys and girls basketball. McBee is survived by his wife Sue and three children, Chase, Skylar, and Megan Schrock.
Skylar, one of McBee's sons, went on to become a walk-on at Tennessee basketball in 2009. He later earned a full scholarship and played for the Vols for four seasons under coaches Bruce Pearl and Cuonzo Martin.
Tennessee's thrilling win over Kansas in 2010, highlighted by Skylar McBee's 3-pointer with 36 seconds left in the game, was Doug McBee's favorite in his son's four years. He attended every game, home and away.
Doug McBee's son Skylar got his hands dirty on mission trips in Haiti, a family hobby, and even played basketball on a South Dakota Indian reservation. The family's love for basketball and community service is a testament to Doug's character.
Grainger High School retired Skylar McBee's jersey in 2012 after graduating with 2,363 career points, the second-most in school history. Doug McBee expressed his gratitude and pride during the ceremony, saying, "We're so appreciative and so humbled because of it. We're just Grainger Countians and we're just so proud of the way they've supported him and taken this opportunity to honor him. Words can't express how you feel at moments like this."
Doug McBee's visitation and funeral are scheduled for July 27 at Blue Springs Baptist Church. A celebration of life will follow at 7 p.m.
