David Alaba is set to join Udinese, adding a player with over 130 appearances for Real Madrid and a lengthy Bayern Munich career to the Italian side’s defence. The Austrian’s arrival poses an immediate question for coach Kosta Runjaic: where will Alaba fit in a back three that has struggled this season?
According to Calciomercato, Alaba can play either as the central defender or the left-sided braccetto in Udinese’s defensive setup. The latter appears the more likely role, which would put him in direct competition with Enzo Ebosse for a starting place.
Udinese’s defensive situation has been unsettled this season. Injuries to Oumar Solet and Matteo Palma before the recent international break forced Christian Kabasele into the side alongside Abankwah and Ebosse. Both Solet and Palma are expected to return soon, giving Runjaic more options and easing the pressure on the defence. This timing allows Alaba some space to build up his fitness and adapt to the team.
Fitness remains the main concern for Alaba. After a strong first season at Real Madrid, his minutes gradually decreased due to recurring physical problems. However, his place in the Austrian national team remained secure, as he started every match at the World Cup until Austria’s exit in the last 32.
Udinese will resume their Serie A campaign on Monday 12 October with an away game against Torino. Whether Alaba starts that match is less important than what he brings over the season: a left-footed defender comfortable stepping into midfield and a presence in a dressing room at a club whose defensive record has not met its ambitions so far.
