Coventry secured their first Premier League win in 25 years with a 4-1 victory over Newcastle at home on Monday, ending a tough start to the season and climbing to 14th place in the table.
The Midlands club had lost their first four league matches but followed up a narrow win against Nottingham Forest before the international break with a commanding performance against Newcastle. Teenager Sidiki Cherif played a standout role, scoring one goal and setting up another.
Just four minutes into the match, Cherif was fouled inside the box, and Jack Rudoni converted the resulting penalty to give Coventry an early lead. Newcastle controlled much of the first half without testing Coventry’s goalkeeper seriously, but the second half told a different story.
Three minutes after the break, Cherif doubled the lead with a low shot from the edge of the box. Newcastle responded in the 70th minute when Sven Botman struck a stunning goal, cutting the deficit to 2-1. However, Coventry quickly restored their two-goal advantage nine minutes later through Ellis Simms.
The final goal came in the 86th minute from 18-year-old Stephen Mfuni, who is on loan from Manchester City. The centre-back scored his first professional goal to cap a memorable evening for Coventry and their manager Frank Lampard.
Newcastle remain just above Coventry in the standings, sitting three places and two points ahead. Coventry’s win ended a quarter-century wait for a top-flight victory since their last Premier League campaign.
The result was a significant boost for Lampard’s side, who had struggled early in the season but now have back-to-back wins to build on. The match highlighted Coventry’s clinical finishing and ability to capitalize on key moments, particularly in the second half.
The game also offered encouragement for Coventry’s young players, with Cherif’s involvement in two goals and Mfuni’s breakthrough goal standing out. Coventry will look to continue their progress when the league resumes after the international break.
