The Washington Commanders begin training camp on Wednesday with a growing injury list, including two key players who won't be dressed for the first day.
The Commanders general manager Adam Peters met with the media to preview camp and provide some updates. Peters mentioned that punter Tress Way and linebacker Kain Medrano are both dealing with injuries and won't be dressed for the first day.
Peters said that Way suffered a pectoral injury, but it's not expected to keep him out for an extended period of time. Meanwhile, Medrano is rehabbing a minor hamstring injury from the offseason and should be back shortly.
Tress Way has been Washington's punter since 2014, missing only one game in 12 seasons with the team. The 32-year-old veteran has been replaced by Matt Haack, who signed with the Commanders on Tuesday. Haack has punted in the NFL since 2017 and appeared in seven games for the Arizona Cardinals last season, averaging 51 yards per punt.
Medrano is competing for a spot on Washington's 53-man roster after Nick Bellore's surprise retirement. The second-year player played exclusively on special teams as a rookie last season and has an opportunity to impress coaches this summer.
The Commanders have a few players on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, including cornerback Trey Amos, edge rusher Dorance Armstrong, and defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. Those moves weren't unexpected, considering all three players finished last season on injured reserve after suffering season-ending injuries.
The Commanders begin training camp on Wednesday, and it will be interesting to see how the injured players progress. Peters' updates suggest that the team is being cautious with their players, but it's unclear how long the injured players will be out.
The Commanders will start training camp without Tress Way and Kain Medrano, but it's expected that both players will be back on the field soon. The team's decision to sign Matt Haack as a replacement for Way suggests that they are preparing for the worst-case scenario.
