Claire Dowling becomes first woman captain of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club

Claire Dowling became the first woman to serve as Captain of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews by completing the traditional Driving-in Ceremony on the first tee at the Old Course on Friday. Her appointment follows a nomination by past captains in May, and she officially begins her one-year term on September 25.

Dowling’s presence on the Old Course was historic for the club, founded in 1754, which had only admitted women as members starting in 2015. She was among the first female members and has held several roles within the club’s governance. Between 2015 and 2019, Dowling served on the Rules Committee and was Deputy Chair from 2017. She joined the General Committee in 2019 and became its Deputy Chair in 2022. Most recently, she contributed to the Membership Committee.

On the eve of her Driving-in Ceremony, Dowling met with R&A CEO Mark Darbon. She described the honour as overwhelming, saying, “To follow in the footsteps of some fantastic captains and the rich heritage of the club for over 250 years, it’s just an amazing thing. I could never have imagined it.”

Dowling’s appointment comes after a lengthy amateur playing career. Golfweek’s Adam Schupak reported that she captained the Great Britain & Ireland Curtis Cup team in 2000 during a narrow 10-8 defeat to the United States at Ganton. She also led the Vagliano Trophy team and the Irish national team in later years.

She spoke about the ceremony, describing it as “incredibly intimidating.” The incoming captain is escorted to the tee by the honorary professional and the outgoing captain. Dowling joked about the experience, saying the procession “looks as if they’ve been walked to the gallows.” The honorary professional tees up the ball, and the captain must hit it without a practice swing, hoping it gets airborne on the first attempt.

The Driving-in Ceremony is a long-standing tradition at the club, symbolising the start of a captain’s tenure. Dowling’s role will involve representing the club and its interests during her year in office.

Her appointment as the club’s first female captain marks a new chapter for The Royal and Ancient Golf Club, which has played a significant role in the history and governance of golf worldwide. The club issues the rules of golf alongside the United States Golf Association and organises The Open Championship, golf’s oldest major tournament.

Dowling’s tenure begins amid growing discussions about gender equality and inclusion in golf. She has been active in various leadership positions within the club since women were first admitted as members, reflecting gradual changes in one of golf’s most traditional institutions.
